Grosso Gadgetto & NLC – Peripheral (2CD, Attenuation Circuit)
One of the artists who used to receive regular reviews from me was NLC, or in full Nouvelles Lectures Cosmopolites, which has been around since 1990. This solo affair by Julien Ash grows over the years from industrial guitar music to a kaleidoscopic cross-pollination of medieval and classical music, ambient, world music and even pop and trip hop. Ash was also found in Maelstrøm and A Sparrow-Grass Hunt. After a hiatus of about 15 years, he started actively releasing music again in 2022; and a lot too. Not only from NLC alone, but also in collaboration with Innocent But Guilty and Grosso Gadgetto plus under his “own” name earlier this year also with Christophe Petchanatz from Klimperei, among others. Now NLC is back with the album Peripheral, which was created together with Grosso Gadgetto, which is the project of Christian Gonzales who has also drawn from all kinds of different styles in the past (from ambient to bkack metal). Now a double CD, containing 12 tracks that are evenly divided over the two discs, each over 52 minutes long. The mainly electronic music lands somewhere between ambient, electro, spacey IDM, drones and electronic sounds and beats in a spatial and slightly experimental way. With guests on violin and flute plus their own piano sounds, the music sometimes gets a neoclassical touch and the use of voice samples also gives it a human character. The first disc is slightly more cinematic and the second slightly more rhythmic, but they are not very different from each other. Everywhere they bring the music in multiple layers, creating enormous depth and always making it exciting and surprising. They cover all of this with a fine melancholic and slightly dark varnish, which allows everything to creep deep under the skin. The two deliver a masterful listening trip here, which you cannot easily shake off.
